Environmental Assessment:
Between 2017 and 2022, environmental consultants conducted extensive soil sampling and site investigations. Contaminant levels were assessed across various depths, revealing areas exceeding cleanup standards for arsenic and lead. A Cleanup Action Plan was developed, incorporating a combination of soil excavation, capping, and consolidation to address contamination while preserving natural site features.

A Cleanup Action Plan was developed, incorporating a combination of soil excavation, capping, and consolidation to address contamination while preserving natural site features.
Key Findings:
-
Approximately 10 tons of arsenic-contaminated soil were excavated and disposed of at a certified landfill.
-
Clean gravel and soil caps were installed across activity areas, trails, and camping pads.
-
Signage and fencing were added to restrict access and protect capped areas.
-
Annual monitoring and maintenance plans were established to ensure the long-term integrity of the site.
Conclusion:
In April 2025, the Washington State Department of Ecology issued a No Further Action (NFA) opinion for Camp Kilworth, validating that cleanup standards had been achieved. With protective measures and ongoing monitoring in place, the site is now ready for redevelopment as a nature park, preserving open space and providing educational opportunities for future generations.
